The idea for this type of activity came about in today’s REU’s meeting. After all the REUs had reported out on the process of their research, Darrell made the comment they should not get discouraged when they hit little road blocks in their science research because “Science is Messy” and rarely occures in a linear fashion.

We thought of a sort of Monopoly style game, where students are introduced to the idea that science is not nice and neat.

The above link provides a primitive idea of what we were thinking about. It is interactive, so to see the Essential Question and Objectives click anywhere on the light blue screen. Click on the question marks to see how the game changes when someone lands on them.

The Essential Question:

  • What does the process of science look like?

Objectives:

  • Students will discover the scientific process is not linear
  • Students will learn how the steps of the scientific method are applied to solve a problem or answer a question
  • Students will understand science is dynamic and every changing

Homework:

  • Reflect on how the “Science is Messy” game relates to the scientific process in the “real world” by writing a page reflection (double spaced and 12 font).
